Our 2024 trip to Cuba fell short of expectations, aptly titled “Vanishing Cuba.” After 65 years of communism and socialism, this once-prosperous nation, rich in culture and history, now faces significant challenges. Beautiful cities and villages are often poorly maintained, and many citizens lacking access to foreign currency live in difficult conditions, struggling to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, the ruling elite continues to live in luxury behind gated communities, seemingly oblivious to the struggles of everyday Cubans. Although tourists may not witness the full extent of this disparity, their presence brings vital US dollars that support both the elite’s lifestyle and minimal assistance for the general populace, aimed at preventing unrest. This stark contrast is disheartening, and we urge visitors not to be misled by the photos shared here.

Despite the economic struggles, we encountered many genuinely warm and welcoming individuals who shared fascinating stories about their lives. Their hospitality transformed our visit into a memorable experience that we wouldn’t trade for anything. Cuba may be fading, but the resilience and spirit of its people remain vibrant.
